In 2022/2023, Bangladesh’s cotton imports may decrease to 8 million bales, compared to 8.52 million bales in 2021/2022. The reason for the decrease in imports is firstly due to the high international cotton prices; The second is that the domestic power shortage in Bangladesh has led to a decrease in clothing production and a slowdown in the world economy.
The report states that Bangladesh is the world’s second largest exporter of clothing and highly relies on imported products for yarn production. In 2022/2023, cotton consumption in Bangladesh may decrease by 11% to 8.3 million bales. The consumption of cotton in Bangladesh in 2021/2022 is 8.8 million bales, and the consumption of yarn and fabric in Bangladesh will be 1.8 million tons and 6 billion meters, respectively, which are about 10% and 3.5% higher than the previous year.
