At present, the planting of autumn crops in India is accelerating, with the planting area of sugarcane, cotton, and miscellaneous grains increasing year-on-year, while the area of rice, beans, and oil crops decreasing year-on-year.
It is reported that the year-on-year increase in rainfall in May this year provided support for the planting of autumn crops. According to the statistics of India Meteorological Department, the rainfall in May this year reached 67.3 mm, 10% higher than the historical long-term average (1971-2020), and the third highest in history since 1901. Among them, the monsoon rainfall in the northwest region of India exceeded the historical long-term average by 94%, and the rainfall in the central region also increased by 64%. Due to the high rainfall, the storage capacity of the reservoir has also significantly increased.
According to statistics from the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, the reason for the increase in cotton planting area in India this year is that cotton prices have consistently exceeded MSP in the past two years. Up to now, India’s cotton planting area has reached 1.343 million hectares, up 24.6% from 1.078 million hectares in the same period last year, of which 1.25 million hectares are from Hayana, Rajasthan and Punjab.
