India Small Cotton Farmers Suffer Heavy Losses Due To Insufficient CCI Acquisition

Indian cotton farmers said they faced difficulties because CCI did not buy. As a result, they were forced to sell their products to private traders at a price much lower than MSP (5300 rupees to 5600 rupees).

Small farmers in India are selling cotton to private traders because they pay cash, but larger cotton farmers worry that selling at a lower price will cause them huge losses. According to farmers, private traders offered prices of 3000 to 4600 rupees per kilowatt based on cotton quality, compared with 5000 to 6000 rupees per kilowatt last year. The farmer said that CCI did not give any relaxation to the percentage of water in cotton.

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture of India suggested that farmers dry the cotton before sending it to CCI and other procurement centers to keep the moisture content below 12%, which would help them obtain MSP per 5550 rupees/hundredweight. The official also said that nearly 500000 acres of cotton were planted in the state this season.
