Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani, Minister of Agriculture of C ô te d’Ivoire, said on Friday that due to the impact of parasites, the cotton production of C ô te d’Ivoire is expected to decline by 50% to 269000 tons in 2022/23.
A tiny parasite called “jaside” in the shape of a green grasshopper has invaded cotton crops and significantly reduced the production forecast of West Africa in 2022/23.
C ô te d’Ivoire is the largest cocoa producer in the world. Before the outbreak of civil war in 2002, it was one of the major cotton exporters in Africa. After years of political turmoil leading to a sharp decline in output, the country’s cotton industry has been recovering in the past 10 years.
