In 2022, China’s share of US clothing imports significantly decreased. In 2021, the United States’ clothing imports to China increased by 31%, while in 2022, they decreased by 3%. Imports to other countries increased by 10.9%.
In 2022, China’s share of U.S. clothing imports decreased from 37.8% to 34.7%, while the share of other countries increased from 62.2% to 65.3%.
In many cotton product lines, imports to China have experienced a double-digit decline, while chemical fiber products have the opposite trend. In the chemical fiber category of men’s/boys’ knitted shirts, China’s import volume increased by 22.4% year-on-year, while the women’s/girls’ category decreased by 15.4%.
Compared to the situation before the 2019 pandemic, the import volume of many types of clothing from the United States to China in 2022 decreased significantly, while the import volume to other regions increased significantly, indicating that the United States is moving away from China in clothing imports.
In 2022, the unit price of clothing imports from the United States to China and other regions rebounded, rising 14.4% and 13.8% year-on-year, respectively. In the long run, as work and production costs rise, the competitive advantage of Chinese products in the international market will be affected.
